Part of enjoying your wine experience has to do with the wine glasses you use. However, once you've finished an evening with friends and this fragile piece of glassware, the debate becomes 'in the dishwasher' or 'by hand'.
While both methods have their merits, its important to understand the right way to clean your crystal wine glasses.
Let's take a look at quick tips for washing your wine glasses by hand and in the dishwasher.
By Hand
When washing your wine glasses by hand, use these simple tips to make cleaning a breeze.
1. Use hot water and a crystal clean solution. ( *Note: If you don't have a crystal clean solution, a mild soap will work, but beware of residue that could impact the taste of your next glass.)
2. Choose a soft sponge or sommelier washing kit that will fit into the unique shape of your glassware. Some decanters have long skinny necks and wide bowls that can make it difficult to get all the sediment at the bottom.
3. Let your wine glassware air dry completely before putting them back in the cabinet or on the bar. A sturdy drying rack will hold your wine glasses by the foot upside down so they don't fall over and break. Also, decanter drying rack will hold your decanter upside down without fear of breakage.
In The Dishwasher
You can wash you wine glassware in the dishwasher. However, for crystal wine glasses with thinner bowls and stems, I strongly recommend washing by hand. And, decanters can be an awkward fit in most dishwashers. So, if you are going to use the dishwasher, consider these tips:
1. Set your dishwasher to the gentle cycle.
2. Turn off the heated drying cycle.
3. Use a stemware grip to hold the stems of your glasses upright to minimize breakage
Regardless how you decide to clean your wine glasses, I find it best to tackle this delicate task the next morning. So, a quick rinse before bed ensures that the sediment doesn't settle and makes cleaning your crystal wine glasses easier.
Cheers!
